This has been a rough year for many of us, but as the economy begins to recover, don't just go back to business as usual. You can use the experience of this recession year to create a stronger, more profitable business than ever before. Here are seven ways to do that. - Understand that the economy is cyclical and we WILL have future recessions. It's just a matter of time. Concentrate on taking advantage of the good times to prepare for the bad.
- Rather than just restoring everything you've cut, focus on the highest priority items and bring them back online in the order that they will enhance profitability, attract customers, and retain your best employees.
- Analyze your business and focus on the revenue streams or client segments that have remained strong. If you scrambled to find other revenue areas during the downturn and find they are not as profitable as the rest of your business, consider cutting them now.
- As you move toward the end of the year, be aware of upcoming cyclical expenditures such as holidays, year-end taxes, bonuses, etc. Create a plan to manage these without increasing your debt.
- Don't neglect marketing and self-development. To move ahead, these two important components must be a part of your ongoing plan.
- Make a list of your "A Team" -- those who did you a favor when you needed it. This list might include someone who provided referrals, a banker who extended a loan, a neighbor who helped you out. Go out of your way to pay them back by giving them more business, referring prospects to them, buying them a gift.
- Make it a priority to take care of yourself by working out, visiting a spa, taking a vacation. Remember, the one thing you can't do without is your health.
